The HSRS team succesfully exhibited at Railtex/Infrarail 2022, Olympia, London. The event not only gave us great insight into the many different projects, companies, and people that make up the railway industry; but also gave us an opportunity to show the industry at large who we are, what we do, and why what we do is so vital to the success of railway infrastructure projects. The Paddington Train Detection Project was succesfully commissioned for the 25th December 2021. 777 axle counter wheel sensors, 12 new REBs, 131 Lightweight enclosures, 220,000 metres of cable,
and 4 new Smartlock Interlockings were all installed over a 2 year period that will vastly improve the reliability and performance in the region.
This is the first time the new Smartlock Interlocking baseline has interfaced with the Frauscher Axle Counter subsystem and the currently commissioned Alstom Radio Block Centre and also the first time Supervisor Track Sections and Counting Head Control functionality has been deployed.
We're very proud of the efforts the HSRS team played in completing the Alstom safety assurance activities and developing the joint Alstom and Network Rail assurance glidepath that culminated in early acceptance of the safety argument being presented and endorsement from the Wales and Western System Review Panel, prior to the commissioning at Christmas.
The specific application safety case needed to account for the outputs from specific application safety analysis included:
All of these fed into updates to Product Acceptance Certificates.
This wouldn't have been possible without the massive inputs from the technical and safety assurance staff at Alstom, collaboration with the Network Rail safety assurance team, and a huge amount of hard work from all involved.

The HSRS team hosted a presentation to students from the National College for Advanced Transport & Infrastructure. The main
topics for the presentation were Railway Engineering Safety Management as well as compliance with the Common Safety Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment (CSM RA) Regulations.
The National College for Advanced Transport & Infrastructure has been established to provide highly skilled technicians, project managers, and apprentices to lead the UK’s rail, transport and infrastructure sectors. We were therefore proud to provide insight into the importance of engineering safety management and the processes to be followed.

The April Bank Holiday saw another major milestone with the "over and back" testing of the next stage of ETCS on the Great Western Mainline as ETCS L2 overlay progresses towards Paddington.
This would not have been possible without the fantastic cross-industry collaboration.
A member of the HIgh Speed Rail Solutions team assisted in the development of the safety analysis activities and Safety Justification Report that allowed dynamic testing to be undertaken. Find out more here.

The last few weekends have seen a number of successful commissionings as part of the Brent Cross project. This has included a major slew of one of the mainlines that will allow for the construction of the new station island platforms; as well as the commissioning of a new AHB Level Crossing within the Cricklewood Sidings. A great job by Network Rail, Amey Rail and Mace amongst many others.
High Speed Rail Solutions is delighted to have led the System Safety Engineering
(CSM RA) activities across the project. Find out more about our involvement here.
