An introduction to the Canadian Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment for

Railway Systems (CM-REA) Standard

The CM-REA was issued as a National Standard in October 2022 (CSA R114:22) and is now being mandated on railway projects in Canada.

Failure to comply could lead to loss of life and human harm, prosecution, delays to project commissioning, increased costs to complete, and reputational damage!

The purpose of the 1-day training is to provide delegates with insights of the new requirements placed on proponents and participants in the identification and management of hazards.

The course provides for open discussion between delegates and our experienced safety leaders and includes examples of how the standard will be applied to railway infrastructure projects and the content of key deliverables.

Delegates will gain knowledge of:

  • Background to Engineering Safety Management
  • Introduction to Rail Engineering Safety Management standards
  • Background to the CM-REA
  • Key terms and definitions
  • Context and scope
  • Risk evaluation and assessment process
  • Methods of identifying safety measures and requirements and in demonstrating compliance
  • Risk management actors; their responsibilities and competence
  • Independent Assessment
  • Project lifecycle requirements
  • Key deliverables

If you are involved in making any change to a railway system that is technical, operational or organisational in nature then you need to be familiar with the requirements of the CM-REA risk management framework.

This programme is therefore ideally suited for Sponsors, Project Directors/Managers, Project Engineers, Designers and Systems Engineering and Assurance teams.

The course is non-technical and assumes no prior knowledge in system/functional safety.

Completion of the course demonstrates your commitment to safely integrating complex railway systems and meeting the requirements of the CM-REA risk management process.

A certificate of attainment will be issued upon successful completion of the multiple-choice examination.
